Dad Blog Posts of the Week

I am getting a lot of benefit from reading blog posts of others around parenting. Most of these are from dads as I like to get their perspective on parenting so it helps me understand what to expect or hints and tricks on being a Dad.

As such, I thought I’d pull together five blog posts I’ve read recently and share them with you in case you find them interesting too. I’m all for sharing as much as possible to help.

Gender Stereotypes are Meaningless

This is a great read all about gender stereotypes. It all started from a poster for the film “A Wrinkle In Time” and got this Dad thinking about the stereotypes around gender and the relationship to children.

It’s interesting to me as it’s something I and Clare have often discussed. That even if N wants to play with a doll, or a pram, or something traditionally girl orientated, then we should let him. We think it’s important for N to make his own choices in life when appropriate, including toys. Why not? What’s the worst that’s going to happen? As long as a pram doesn’t kill him and he is having fun and he is happy who cares?

Winter’s Here, But Are You Ready?

This is a very timely post by this Dad over at DIY Daddy given the weather we are facing right now. I don’t know about near you but the weather is pretty horrendous near us. Thankfully I have been able to work from home to avoid taking any risks out on the roads, but for those that are out these I feel for you, it’s tough driving on snow and ice. Take your time and be safe.

The first thing that attracted me to the post was “Winter’s Here” as it reminded me of Game of Thrones. No idea if This Dad is a fan but I am, so it set off my geek side! However, when reading he gives some good advice, including on what to put in your car so you’re safe even if you get stuck.

Have a look and see what you think. Be safe!

The Additional Benefits of Baby and Toddler Swimming Lessons

This has struck home for me as we are going to take N to a pool for the first time in the not too distant future and we are just starting to plan everything out. There are a lot of things we’ve thought of that swimming could teach N, like the ability to swim, to be safe around water, and hopefully he will have a lot of fun (I’m sure we will with him!) so we are looking forward to it.

This Dad has backed up lots of our thoughts and impressions about what to expect and has told us of a few more things to expect too. I think it’s important that if you’re starting a new activity that you get some advance warning of what to expect, and He has done that well for me!

Thinking About My Next Charity Challenge

So I’ve read some of Isablog blog posts before now, as shown in my post about men getting postnatal depression so I’ve read his stuff for a while. Plus, charity work is really important in my opinion and something I’ll look to encourage N in. It’s not that you have to do the challenges necessarily, but supporting those that do is important.

This blogger is looking for a really tough challenge for himself to raise money for charity. I remember doing Decembeard and raising over £1,000 to fight cancer. Now all I did was grow a beard and put up with the constant itching for a few weeks. He is after something much more difficult. Have a read, perhaps give him an idea or two, and please do support him when he does his event.

I’ve done a post before now with some quick tips and tricks on parenting practicalities (here) in order to help where possible. I’m all for sharing knowledge to try and help fellow dads and mums but let the parent decide what to do from there.

This is a really good read and is a well written post with some tips for new parents. Some of these I knew about and others will help me when N is a little older.

If you’ve a young child take a look!

There You Have It…

So there we are, my first summary of some excellent posts by fellow Dads. Hope you’ve had a read of some of them, if not all.

Let me know what you think to these, I’d be really interested.
