Dad Blog Posts of the Week – 16th March 2018

It’s great to see the fantastic community around Dad blogging and to be a part of it. I always try to take the time to see what other Dads are doing out there and enjoy reading many blog posts. Here are my favourites this week…

This is a really interesting topic looking at the perception of Mums versus Dads. Yet I think it’s difficult to try and compare the two roles en masse when every individual Dad is unique and every individual Mum is unique. However, it seems to be so commonly done, and it’s so easy for a few bad Dads to cast a shadow over the vast vast majority of great Dads.

Based on that this is a really interesting read and gives a perspective on why Dads are not viewed in the same way as Mums. I too am working on a similar post to this at the moment but it’s not something I want to rush as it’s an important topic. Have a read of this post, it raises a few interesting points.

This is such a moving post all about the role of a Dad within the family. It talks through how this Dad tried to be the rock for all of his family but almost seemed to forget about his own mental health needs. It takes a number of twists and turns through the post which really sends you on an emotional rollercoaster but I would fully recommend reading this. It’s very well written, easy to read and very engaging.

This is a great post all about how being supportive of your children is so important. There’s negative reinforcement and then theres positive reinforcement. I’m very much on the positive side. He smiles and I encourage him to do more so goodness knows what I’ll be like when he does something amazing in school or sport for example!

This post gives some examples of phrases to use to be supportive, and also shows a great outcome when you do. Take a read and see what you think.

Why Dads Aren’t Taking Up Shared Parental Leave (But Why We All Should)

I’ve shared posts before about shared parental leave as I believe its an important option for parents. It’s also not something taken up very often by Dads which is a shame, and this post explores some of the reasons why. Personally I did take some extended leave but as I wouldn’t be paid for it then it wasn’t really feasible to take much. It’s a shame that I couldn’t take paid leave as I definitely would have.

There are other countries in the world where Dads are given as much paid leave as Mums on an equal footing, and one taking leave doesn’t punish the other. Wouldn’t that be lovely here in the UK!

Again, this is all about parental leave. Yes, here in the UK I believe we are at the very beginning of sorting out the parental leave situation but at least we’ve made a start. Sometimes I think it’s a shame we don’t look more at what other countries are doing that set a good example and try to just copy them, and parental leave would be a good place to start!
